How to Read Water Color Offshore
Deep blue water is clear and low in nutrients; green water carries chlorophyll. That's the basic rule anglers already use by eye, and it's the same physical property Chlorofishy's chlorophyll layer measures from orbit. The chart is a quantified version of what you're already looking at over the rail.
Why blue means clear, and green means productive
Open ocean water scatters and absorbs light in a way that leaves mostly blue wavelengths visible when there's little else in the water to interact with. Chlorophyll-a, the pigment phytoplankton use to photosynthesize, absorbs blue and red light and reflects green, so water with meaningful phytoplankton concentration visibly shifts from blue toward green. More plankton in the water is, in principle, more food further up the chain.
Not all green is the same signal
A phytoplankton bloom fed by upwelling and a river plume carrying sediment and organic runoff can both look green, but they're fundamentally different water: one is a productivity signal worth targeting, the other is turbidity that can actually work against visibility and predation.
