Satellite Pass Coverage by Region

Composites cover every region equally, but satellite pass coverage varies: a satellite only contributes a pass to a region if its actual orbit footprint crossed that region's bounds on a given day.

Why do some regions have fewer satellite passes than others?

Every one of Chlorofishy's 38 fishing regions is eligible for pass coverage, but eligibility isn't the same as a guaranteed pass. Whether a given satellite actually contributes a pass to a region on a given day comes down to whether that satellite's real orbital footprint intersected the region, which varies by satellite, orbit, and day, and genuinely differs region to region. There's no fixed, publishable list of "covered" regions, because coverage is a live property of the data, not a static setting.

What does the map show me in a region with light coverage?

The source dropdown marks any satellite with nothing usable for the current region as "no data," and summarizes how many of the available satellites came back empty. If nothing at all is available for the selected layer, the timeline row disappears and the map shows a centered message: "No sea surface temperature (or chlorophyll) data in this region" for a genuinely empty result, versus a separate, distinct message when passes exist but aren't included in your plan (see below). Composites are unaffected either way: they're a worldwide, gap-filled product and are always available regardless of pass coverage.

How is "empty" different from "locked"?

An empty region genuinely has nothing to show right now: no satellite crossed it usefully. A locked region has real satellite passes, but they're outside what your plan covers; the map tells you passes exist and offers composites plus an upgrade path instead of a plain empty message.
