Thermocline Depth, Explained

The thermocline is the layer of the water column where temperature drops sharply with depth, marking the transition from warm, sunlit surface water to cold, dense deep water: typically tens to 100 meters down, and a satellite can't see it directly.

What it actually is

NOAA's National Ocean Service defines the thermocline as the transition layer between the warmer mixed water at the surface and the cooler deep water below, where temperature drops rapidly rather than gradually. It exists because sunlight only warms the top of the ocean directly, and wind-driven mixing only stirs that warmth so far down before deeper, denser cold water resists mixing further.

Depth varies by season and latitude

NOAA's own description notes the thermocline is semi-permanent in the tropics, seasonally variable in temperate regions (typically deepest during summer, as sustained solar heating warms a thicker surface layer, and shallower in winter as the surface cools and mixes down less), and shallow to essentially absent in polar regions, where the water column runs cold from top to bottom.

Why it matters even though you can't see it on a chart

Chlorofishy's SST layer only measures the surface; it can't show you thermocline depth directly. But surface temperature and known regional thermocline behavior together are still useful: a sharp surface temperature break often indicates a shallower thermocline nearby, since strong surface gradients and strong vertical stratification tend to co-occur in the same current systems and fronts.
