Sea Surface Temperature Map for Offshore Fishing
Sea surface temperature is the single best piece of intel you can pull up before you leave the dock. Bait stacks up where warm and cold water meet — a break of a degree or two can hold more life than fifty miles of flat, uniform water on either side of it. The map above shows you that water in color, built from the same satellites that watch the whole ocean every day, so you can find the break before you burn fuel looking for it.
Two Kinds of Data, One Map
Two different things feed this map, and it's worth knowing which one you're looking at. The color you see by default is a composite — one blended picture built from MUR, the Multi-scale Ultra-high Resolution sea surface temperature analysis that NASA publishes once a day. MUR fills in the clouds and gaps between satellite passes by combining several instruments and a bit of modeling, so it always shows the whole ocean, but it's a best estimate rather than a direct reading, and it's roughly a day old by the time it's published.
The other option is a raw satellite pass — one specific overflight, at one specific time, with the real cloud gaps left in instead of smoothed over. Those come from ACSPO, the processing NOAA runs on raw infrared readings to turn them into a temperature grid, applied to VIIRS, an instrument flown on the S-NPP, NOAA-20, and NOAA-21 satellites (S-NPP is short for Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership — one of three near-identical satellites sharing the same orbit). A pass can be a few hours old instead of a full day, and because nothing has been filled in, you're looking at exactly what the satellite saw, gaps and all.

There's no guessing which one you're looking at, either — every reading on this map carries its own timestamp and satellite name, so you know exactly how fresh it is before you plan around it.
What Your Account Sees
What you get depends on your account. Browsing without signing in, you're seeing composites held back at least 48 hours — current enough to tell you where a break has been sitting, not current enough to run out on today.
