Temperature Breaks Map for Offshore Fishing

A temperature break is where two bodies of water meet — warm meeting cool, or a fast current meeting slower water — and it's one of the most reliable pieces of structure in the open ocean. Bait stacks up along the line. Predators patrol it looking for an easy meal. Find the break and you've usually found the fish, or at least found the right water to start looking in.

How to Read a Break on This Map

A break shows up on the map as a place where the color changes fast instead of gradually. Zoom into an area where the color goes from deep blue to orange or red within a short distance, and you're looking at a real edge, not just a slow warming trend across a wide stretch of ocean. Click along that line and you'll get exact temperature readings in °F or °C at each point — a break of only a degree or two, over a short distance, is often enough to matter. The tighter the color gradient, the sharper the break.

Not every break is worth running to. A weak, wide gradient spread over fifty miles is a general warming trend, not structure. A tight gradient over a mile or two — especially one that holds its shape across a few days of composites — is the kind of edge experienced captains build a trip around. Breaks also tend to form along consistent geography: the wall of the Gulf Stream, the edge of a canyon, the boundary of an eddy. Once you've found where breaks tend to set up in a region you fish often, you'll know where to look first next time.

Composite vs. Pass — Why Freshness Matters More Here

Everywhere else on this map, the difference between a composite and a satellite pass is mostly about resolution and cloud cover. For temperature breaks, it's about something more important: breaks move. Current pushes them, wind pushes them, and a break that was sitting in one spot yesterday can be five or ten miles away today. The composite you see by default is MUR, the Multi-scale Ultra-high Resolution analysis NASA publishes once a day — fine for most purposes, but for a break that's actively drifting, a day is enough time for it to have moved past where you're planning to run. A raw satellite pass, sourced from ACSPO, NOAA's processing of raw infrared readings from the VIIRS instrument on the S-NPP (short for Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership), NOAA-20, and NOAA-21 satellites, can be a few hours old instead of a full day — the difference between finding the edge where it actually is today and finding where it used to be.
