Ocean Temperature Map

Sea surface temperature is one of the simplest, most useful numbers the ocean gives you. It tells boaters what they're motoring into, tells swimmers and paddlers what to expect before they get wet, and tells anyone curious about the water off their coast exactly how warm or cold it is right now. This map shows that temperature in color, built from the same satellites that scan the entire ocean every day.

How the Map Is Built

The color you see by default is a composite — one blended picture of the whole ocean built from MUR, the Multi-scale Ultra-high Resolution sea surface temperature analysis NASA publishes once a day. MUR combines readings from several satellites and fills in the clouds in between, so it always shows a complete picture rather than a patchwork of gaps. It's an estimate rather than a single direct reading, and it's roughly a day old by the time it's published.

For a closer look, the map can also show an individual satellite pass instead of the blended composite — one specific overflight, at one specific time, with the real cloud cover left in rather than smoothed over. Those passes come from instruments called VIIRS and MODIS, flown on NOAA and NASA satellites that circle the globe scanning the ocean surface. A pass can be a few hours old instead of a full day, though it won't cover every spot on every trip past — clouds block satellites the same way they block the sun.

Why the Number Changes Through the Year

Ocean temperature isn't static, and it doesn't move in step with air temperature the way you might expect. Water holds heat far longer than air does, so coastal water often keeps warming for weeks after the hottest days of summer have passed, and stays cold well into spring even once the air feels warm again. Currents complicate the picture further — a current pushing colder water up from depth can keep one stretch of coastline noticeably cooler than a beach just a few miles away. Checking the actual number, rather than guessing from the calendar or the air temperature, is usually the more reliable approach.
