The Pacific coast of northern Baja is one of the most productive stretches of ocean on the planet. From Ensenada south past San Quintin to Cedros Island and out to Guadalupe, this coast sits on the southern end of the California Current upwelling system. Less than 1% of the world's ocean surface, but it generates roughly 5% of global primary production. That's not a statistic you'll feel while you're getting spooled by a yellowtail at Cedros. But it's why the fishing here is what it is.

Whether you're pulling iron on winter yellowtail at Colonet, soaking bait for white seabass in the San Quintin kelp, freediving calicos at the islands, or running offshore for bluefin on a temp break, this coast delivers. And because the whole food chain here is driven by upwelling and temperature structure, satellite data isn't optional. It's how you find the fish.

Why Water Temperature Runs This Coast

Everything on the Baja Pacific side comes back to the California Current and what it's doing right now.

Cold, nutrient-rich water flows south from the North Pacific. When northwest winds blow along the coast, they push surface water offshore. Deep water rises to replace it. That's upwelling, and it peaks from April through June along this coast. The result is a band of cold, productive water hugging the shoreline while warmer, clearer water sits offshore.

Where those two water masses meet, you get temperature breaks. Bait concentrates along these edges. Kelp paddies drift into the seams. Gamefish stack up. A one or two degree shift over a short distance is the difference between wide-open fishing and pulling blanks. SST imagery shows you exactly where these breaks are sitting today, not where they were last week.

For the islands, it gets even more interesting. Current flowing past Cedros, San Benitos, San Martin, and Guadalupe creates localized upwelling and eddies that concentrate nutrients and bait. These show up on satellite imagery as cold spots on SST and green plumes on chlorophyll. They're the reason island fishing is consistently better than open coast fishing at the same latitude.

Inshore, temperature drives seasonal patterns just as hard. Calico bass get aggressive above 58°F. White seabass key on squid spawns that track a narrow temperature window around 62°F. Yellowtail show on the surface when water climbs into the low 60s but drop deep when it's cooler. The winter yellowtail bite at Colonet happens at 100-180 feet specifically because the fish are holding in the thermocline.

Species and Seasons

Yellowtail: The signature fish of Baja Norte, available somewhere in the region nearly year-round. The Colonet high spot produces winter fish (December-February) on yo-yo iron dropped 100-180 feet. San Martin Island and San Quintin fire up May through July on surface jigs. Cedros peaks late July through mid-October with massive schools of 30+ lb fish on kelp edges and rocky structure. Guadalupe Island on spring long-range trips produces what the fleet calls "Jurassic Park" yellowtail in the 20-50 lb class. They prefer 62-72°F water but will feed in the high 50s. Spearfishermen take yellowtail in kelp at Cedros where fish cruise as shallow as 30 feet.

Bluefin tuna: Summer arrival, typically June through September off Ensenada and on offshore banks. Prefer mid-60s°F water, with best catch rates right around 62-64°F. Found on temperature breaks where upwelled water meets warmer offshore water. These are the same Pacific bluefin that SoCal boats chase, but the Baja side often holds fish when the US side goes quiet.

Yellowfin tuna: Late summer into fall. September through November at Cedros and San Benitos, earlier near Ensenada. Prefer 68-78°F water. Guadalupe Island produces trophy yellowfin in the 70-100+ lb class on the spring long-range schedule.

Calico bass (kelp bass): The bread-and-butter species from Ensenada to the islands, and a top spearfishing target. Cedros has world-class calico populations at every kelp stringer and boiler rock, virtually untouched compared to SoCal. San Benitos produces 5-7 lb fish on 50-fish days. San Martin Island kelp edges hold fish to 6 lbs on swimbaits. Best May through September, but year-round in kelp beds. They feed aggressively above 58°F and move higher in the water column at 64°F.

White seabass: Trophy inshore species for both hook-and-line and spearfishing. San Quintin is renowned for exceptional white seabass fishing in late summer and early fall. Spring through early summer produces fish around Ensenada and Punta Banda on sandy flats near kelp. They follow squid spawns and key on a narrow temperature band around 58-65°F. The magic number is 62°F.

Dorado, wahoo, and warm-water visitors: September through November, when warm water pushes north from the tropics. Dorado under kelp paddies prefer 72°F+. Wahoo at Guadalupe Island may be the best fishery for the species anywhere, with fish to 50 lbs on the cooler side of temperature breaks. El Nino years push these species further north and earlier in the season.

Lingcod and rockfish: Winter and year-round bottom species on rocky structure. Colonet and San Quintin produce fat lingcod and limits of Pacific red snapper, olive rockfish, and other species. The traditional "freezer filler" fishery on 1.5-day trips south of the border.

Broomtail grouper: Deep reef species caught on downriggers at 50-200 feet. The world record, 108 lbs, came off Cedros Island. Also a prized spearfishing target on deeper structure.

The Spots You're Looking For

The northern zone around Ensenada fishes year-round. Bahia de Todos Santos, Isla Todos Santos, and Punta Banda produce calicos, bonito, barracuda, and summer yellowtail from kelp beds 30-45 minutes from the dock. Punta Banda's rocky structure is similar to what you'd find north of Santa Barbara.

The mid-coast is where Baja Norte gets serious. Punta Colonet sits about 65 miles south of Ensenada. The high spot roughly 10 miles offshore is the primary winter yellowtail destination for the San Diego long-range fleet on 1.5-day trips. Isla San Martin, a volcanic island near San Quintin, has a kelp line that produces yellowtail and calicos from May through July. San Quintin Bay itself has sandy flats for white seabass and an outer kelp edge for yellowtail. Sacramento Reef, accessible by skiff, has produced yellowtail to 43 lbs on surface iron.

The offshore islands are the crown jewels. Cedros Island is the premier Pacific Baja destination. Fly-in access, panga-based fishing from island lodges, June through November season. Yellowtail, calicos, white seabass, halibut, broomtail grouper, and late-season pelagics. San Benitos, 15 miles west of Cedros, is inhabited only seasonally by lobster fishermen. The calico bass fishing there is as good as it gets. Natividad sits between Cedros and shore with a trench that produces yellowtail. And Guadalupe Island, 150 miles offshore, is the long-range fleet's trophy destination for yellowfin, yellowtail, and wahoo.

What Chlorophyll Tells You That Temperature Can't

This coast is driven by upwelling, and chlorophyll is the direct readout of how productive the water is right now.

When upwelling is cranking, cold nutrient-rich water hits the surface and phytoplankton bloom. That shows up as high chlorophyll on satellite imagery. Baitfish eat the plankton. Gamefish eat the baitfish. A temperature break with green productive water on the coastal side and blue water offshore is the sweet spot. A temperature break with clear water on both sides might hold nothing.

For spearfishermen and divers, chlorophyll is visibility. High chlorophyll means green water and reduced vis. Low chlorophyll means blue water and clear conditions. Late summer and early fall, as upwelling relaxes, typically has the best visibility. If you're planning a freedive at Cedros or San Benitos, chlorophyll data tells you whether you're looking at a 30-foot vis day or a 10-foot vis day before you book the flight.

The islands make chlorophyll imagery especially useful. Localized upwelling around island structure creates green plumes that attract bait and concentrate gamefish. These plumes shift with wind and current. Yesterday's hot spot might be 5 miles away today. Satellite data shows you where the productivity is right now.

Fog, Marine Layer, and Why Raw Passes Matter

If you fish the Baja Pacific coast in May or June, you know the marine layer. It's the same fog that blankets SoCal, and it causes the same problem for satellite data. Infrared SST sensors can't see through clouds. During peak upwelling season, when temperature breaks are most dynamic and you need data most, traditional cloud-free composites are filling gaps with old data and model estimates.

Chlorofishy shows you both. Composites give the big picture. Raw satellite passes show exactly what each satellite saw on its last overpass, clouds and all. You can see where the data is real and where it's been filled in. For a coast where the temperature structure changes daily during peak season, that distinction matters.

Baja North Ocean Science in Plain English

The California Current is a massive cold-water highway flowing south from the North Pacific along the entire West Coast and down the Baja coast. When northwesterly winds blow parallel to shore, they push surface water offshore through a process called Ekman transport. Cold, nutrient-laden water from the deep rises to replace it. That's upwelling.

Baja Norte sits in one of the most intense upwelling zones in the California Current system. Peak intensity runs April through June, but upwelling occurs to some degree year-round. The nutrients fuel phytoplankton blooms that feed the entire food chain from anchovies to bluefin tuna.

What makes Baja Norte special is that it sits at an oceanographic transition zone. Cool California Current water mixes with warmer subtropical water pushing up from the south. This means both temperate species (lingcod, rockfish, white seabass, calico bass) and tropical species (dorado, wahoo, yellowfin) overlap in the same region depending on season and conditions. El Nino years shift the balance toward tropical species. La Nina years strengthen upwelling and favor the cool-water residents.

The islands amplify everything. Current deflection around Cedros, San Benitos, and Guadalupe creates localized eddies and upwelling that concentrate nutrients and bait in ways that don't happen on the open coast. That's why island fishing consistently outperforms mainland fishing at the same latitude.

Fishing & Diving Calendar

January-February: Winter yellowtail at Colonet high spot on yo-yo iron, weather dependent. Punta Banda bonito and yellowtail between storms. Excellent bottom fishing for lingcod and rockfish at Colonet and San Quintin. Water 58-62°F.

March-April: Upwelling intensifying. White seabass starting at Ensenada and Punta Banda on squid spawns. Halibut moving shallow. Calico bass ramping up in the kelp. Bottom fishing still excellent. Water 58-63°F.

May-June: Peak upwelling season. San Martin Island kelp line producing yellowtail and calicos. San Quintin white seabass building. Cedros Island season opens in June. Bluefin tuna arriving on offshore banks. Marine layer and fog challenge satellite coverage. Water 60-66°F.

July-August: Full summer season. Cedros yellowtail is prime. Calico bass peak everywhere. Guadalupe Island yellowtail trips running. Bluefin and albacore offshore. Water 63-70°F.

September-November: Peak warm-water species. Dorado, wahoo, and yellowfin arrive at Cedros, San Benitos, and Guadalupe. San Quintin white seabass peaks in late summer/early fall. Best dive visibility as upwelling relaxes. Water 66-75°F offshore, cooling through November.

December: Transition to winter pattern. Offshore season winding down. Colonet winter yellowtail trips begin. Bottom fishing for lingcod and rockfish. Water cooling to 58-62°F.
