Ocean Conditions for Fishing, Diving & Spearfishing

The Queensland coast from Cairns to Bundaberg sits behind the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system on Earth. The reef creates a protected lagoon inshore while the outer reef and Coral Sea beyond it hold some of the best game fishing in the Southern Hemisphere. Cairns is the giant black marlin capital. The GBR lagoon holds coral trout, red emperor, and nannygai. And the tropical rivers and estuaries produce barramundi, mangrove jack, and threadfin salmon during the wet season.

The East Australian Current (EAC) pushes warm tropical water south along the coast, maintaining water temperatures between 73-86°F year-round. Cyclone season runs November through May.

Species and Seasons

Giant black marlin: Cairns and Lizard Island host the world's premier heavy-tackle black marlin fishery. September through December, fish averaging 400-800 lbs with granders (1,000+ lbs) a realistic possibility. They follow warm EAC water along the outer reef edge. The Ribbon Reefs between Cairns and Lizard Island are the primary grounds. SST data shows where the warm current is pushing closest to the reef structure.

Coral trout, red emperor, nannygai: The GBR reef fishery. Coral trout are the premier table fish, found on reef structure year-round with best fishing outside the cyclone season (May-November). Red emperor and nannygai on deeper reef structure. Regulated by marine park zoning.

Barramundi: The iconic tropical inshore species. Best during the wet season (November-March) when flooding rivers push bait into estuaries and creeks. Also found in impoundments year-round. River mouth and estuary fishing peaks as runoff creates productivity visible on chlorophyll imagery.

Spanish mackerel and narrow-barred mackerel: Nearshore pelagics year-round with peak numbers in winter (May-September) when water is cooler and clearer.

Giant trevally, queenfish, fingermark: Inshore and reef predators. GTs around reef structure and headlands. Queenfish in estuaries and nearshore. Fingermark on reef and structure.

Yellowfin tuna and wahoo: Outer reef and Coral Sea. Found along current edges and around seamounts. Available year-round with peaks varying by location.

Diving the Great Barrier Reef

The GBR needs no introduction. Over 2,900 individual reefs stretching 2,300 km. The outer reef and Coral Sea offer world-class diving.

Cod Hole near Lizard Island is famous for giant potato cod (100+ lbs) that approach divers. Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea features wall diving, grey reef sharks, and pelagic encounters in crystal-clear water. The Ribbon Reefs offer pristine hard coral gardens with the full spectrum of reef life.

The SS Yongala, a passenger ship sunk in 1911 off Townsville, is consistently rated among the top wreck dives in the world. Resting in 48-98 feet, it's covered in marine life: sea snakes, marble rays, bull sharks, giant trevally, and massive schools of fish.

Why SST and Chlorophyll Matter Here

Wet-season river plumes are the key chlorophyll feature. When monsoon rains flood the tropical rivers, nutrient-rich freshwater pushes onto the inner shelf, creating chlorophyll signatures visible from space. These plumes drive inshore feeding for barramundi, mangrove jack, and threadfin salmon. The edge of the plume concentrates bait.

For the black marlin fishery, SST tracks the EAC's position relative to the outer reef. When warm current water pushes closest to the reef structure, marlin concentrate along the edge. Temperature breaks along the outer reef are the primary fishing feature.

Fishing & Diving Calendar

May-August (dry season): Best overall conditions. Spanish mackerel peak. Coral trout strong. Reef diving at its best with calm seas and good visibility. Water 73-77°F.

September-December: Black marlin season (Cairns/Ribbon Reefs). Warm water building. Cyclone risk beginning November. Water 77-84°F.

January-April (wet season): Barramundi peak in flooded rivers and estuaries. Cyclone risk. River plumes on the inner shelf. Reef fishing variable. Water 82-86°F.
