The Western Mediterranean is where Atlantic bluefin tuna come to spawn. Every year, giant fish enter through the Strait of Gibraltar and make their way to spawning grounds off the Balearic Islands, Valencia, and southern Italy. Fish exceeding 1,000 lbs have been caught off Valencia during the mid-May to June spawning window. Beyond bluefin, the Western Med supports amberjack and dentex on rocky reefs, dusky grouper in marine reserves, and swordfish in deeper offshore waters. And the diving, from Spain's Medes Islands to France's Port-Cros and Sardinia's coast, ranges from pristine marine reserves to historic wrecks.
Water temperatures have been breaking records. The Balearics hit 83°F in July 2025, nearly 9°F above the long-term average. Those temperature anomalies affect everything from species distribution to spawning timing.
Species and Seasons
Bluefin tuna: The Western Med is a primary spawning ground. Valencia is the epicenter for giant fish, with the season peaking mid-May through June. Fish can exceed 1,000 lbs. Elsewhere around the Balearics and along the Spanish and French coasts, smaller bluefin (50-200 lbs) are available from June through October. SST data tracks the warm water corridors they follow.
Swordfish: Deep offshore species. Available in warmer months across the Western Med. Traditional longline fishery now supplemented by recreational deep-drop techniques.
Amberjack: Rocky reefs and underwater structure. One of the most popular Mediterranean sportfish. Available year-round in warmer areas, best May through October. Strong fighters on light tackle.
Dentex: Premium reef predator. Found on rocky structure throughout the Med. Spring and autumn are best. Highly prized by European spearfishermen and rod-and-line anglers.
Dusky grouper: The signature Mediterranean reef species. Large specimens survive in marine reserves (Medes Islands, Port-Cros, Calanques). Protected in most areas but encountered by divers. Rocky reef structure in 30-130 feet.
Albacore: Summer species in offshore waters. Found along temperature breaks and current edges.
Diving the Marine Reserves
Medes Islands off the Costa Brava (Spain) have been a marine reserve since 1983. The result: large groupers, dense schools of sea bream, barracuda, and eagle rays in exceptionally clear water. One of the Mediterranean's premier dive destinations.
Port-Cros on the French Riviera is Europe's first marine park (1963). Pristine posidonia seagrass meadows, groupers, barracuda, and a unique mix of Mediterranean reef life. Visibility can exceed 80 feet.
Calanques National Park near Marseille offers dramatic limestone cliffs dropping underwater into caves and walls. Mediterranean marine life against spectacular geological formations.
Why SST and Chlorophyll Matter
Atlantic water flows into the Mediterranean through Gibraltar, driving the entire circulation pattern. This inflow shows on SST as a cooler tongue entering the Alboran Sea. As it spreads east and warms, it creates temperature gradients that affect species distribution.
Bluefin tuna spawning timing correlates with temperature. They need warm water (72-77°F) for spawning, and SST data shows when conditions reach that threshold off the Balearics and Valencia. The record-breaking temperatures in recent years are shifting these windows earlier.
Chlorophyll in the Med is generally low (oligotrophic), but localized productivity occurs around river mouths (Rhone, Ebro), upwelling zones, and tidal mixing areas. These show on satellite imagery and indicate where the food chain is active.
