Ocean Conditions for Fishing, Diving & Spearfishing

View Live SST & Chlorophyll Data

Sydney is one of the world's great game fishing ports, and the season runs backwards from what most people expect. Winter is the offshore season. The East Australian Current pushes warm eddies south past Sydney from autumn through winter, and those eddies bring yellowfin tuna, southern bluefin, broadbill swordfish, and striped marlin within range. The coast from Sydney south through Jervis Bay, Narooma, Bermagui, and Eden produces a temperate game fishery that rivals any in the Southern Hemisphere.

Inshore, kingfish (yellowtail) are the prized predator around headlands and offshore structure. Snapper hold on reef. Bonito and tailor blitz the beaches. And Jervis Bay offers the best diving in New South Wales.

Species and Seasons

Yellowfin tuna: June through October, riding EAC eddies south past Sydney. Found along temperature breaks where warm eddy water meets cooler shelf water. These eddies are clearly visible on SST imagery as warm anomalies. The contrast between eddy and shelf water concentrates bait and tuna.

Southern bluefin tuna: June and July when cool-water bluefin move through. Found further south off Bermagui and Eden. A highly prized catch under strict quota management.

Striped marlin: January through May, following warm EAC water south along the coast. Found along current edges and temperature breaks.

Broadbill swordfish: May onwards. Deep-drop daytime fishing developing as a serious fishery off Sydney. Found along the shelf break where EAC eddies interact with the continental slope.

Kingfish (yellowtail): The premier inshore-to-nearshore predator. Found around headlands, offshore reefs, and FADs. Available year-round with peaks in the warmer months. Fish range from 5 to 30+ lbs. Top target for lure and live-bait fishing.

Snapper: Reef species on structure throughout the shelf. Autumn and winter produce the best fish. One of the most popular bottom species in NSW.

Bonito, tailor, salmon: Nearshore and beach species. Bonito schools chase bait along the coast spring through autumn. Tailor in the surf from autumn through winter. Australian salmon in schools off the beaches and headlands.

Flathead, bream, mulloway: Estuarine and inshore species year-round. Flathead on sand and mud flats. Bream around structure. Mulloway (jewfish) in deeper estuarine holes and river mouths.

Diving Southern NSW

Jervis Bay has the best diving in NSW. White sand, clear water, grey nurse sharks, weedy seadragons, and diverse reef communities. Marine park protection keeps the ecosystem healthy. Visibility can exceed 60 feet.

Montague Island off Narooma offers fur seal encounters and temperate reef diving. Seasonal encounters with grey nurse sharks and diverse schooling fish.

Sydney harbour and coast has excellent shore diving. Gordon's Bay, Bare Island, and Shelly Beach are accessible from the city. Weedy seadragons, Port Jackson sharks, cuttlefish, and nudibranchs.

Wreck diving off the Sydney coast includes several purpose-sunk vessels creating artificial reef habitat.

Why SST and Chlorophyll Matter Here

EAC eddies are the dominant feature on SST imagery. Warm-core rings that pinch off the main current and drift south past Sydney bring pelagic species with them. SST shows where these eddies are sitting, where their edges create temperature breaks, and how far south warm water has pushed.

The edges between warm eddies and cooler shelf water are where the fishing happens. Yellowfin tuna, swordfish, and marlin concentrate along these breaks. Even 1-2°F differences mark productive boundaries.

Chlorophyll shows where upwelling from cold-core eddies is driving productivity. Elevated chlorophyll along eddy edges indicates active food chains. The contrast between productive shelf water and clean blue eddy water marks the biological edge that concentrates bait.

For divers, chlorophyll tracks visibility. Clear EAC eddy water on the shelf means excellent vis at Jervis Bay and other dive sites. River runoff and coastal productivity reduce it.

Fishing & Diving Calendar
