South Africa has two oceans in one country. The warm Agulhas Current pushes 70 million cubic meters per second of tropical water south along the east coast. The cold Benguela Current drives upwelling along the west coast, pulling water from 650-1,000 feet depth to the surface. They collide at the Cape of Good Hope. That collision creates rogue waves, nutrient mixing, and some of the most diverse marine life on the planet.

Why Water Temperature Runs These Waters
The Agulhas Current (east coast) carries warm water at 72-81°F, supporting tropical and subtropical species: marlin, sailfish, dorado, and the coral reefs at Sodwana Bay. The Benguela Current (west coast) creates upwelling that drops surface temperatures to 48-57°F, driving massive productivity visible on chlorophyll imagery.
Off Cape Point, where these currents interact, temperature breaks form that are among the sharpest in the world. Yellowfin tuna stack up at the 64°F line. The Agulhas Bank cold ridge, visible on both SST and chlorophyll imagery, concentrates fish aggregations. A few miles can mean a 15°F temperature difference.
The sardine run depends entirely on temperature. Each May through July, billions of sardines migrate north along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, following a cold-water corridor created by the Benguela counter-current pushing against the warm Agulhas. The water must drop below 70°F to create this corridor. SST satellite data tracks the cold water's position and predicts where the sardines will concentrate. Climate change is shifting the timing, with arrivals pushing 1.3 days later per decade.
Species and Seasons
Yellowfin tuna: Two runs off Cape Point, October through June. Found along temperature breaks where Agulhas warm water meets Benguela cold water. The 64°F line is the target. Fish range from 20 to 100+ lbs.
Cape yellowtail: November through April. The premier light-tackle species. Found around reefs and pinnacles along the Garden Route and Western Cape. Aggressive feeders that respond to surface lures and live bait.
Snoek: Massive winter runs May through September along the west coast. A uniquely South African species that arrives with the cold Benguela water. Schools can be enormous. The backbone of the Cape Town fishing community.
Kob (mulloway): The premier surf fishing species. October through April in the surf and estuaries. Accounts for 22% of competition catches. Found along sandy beaches, river mouths, and estuary channels.
Garrick (leervis): Winter on the Wild Coast. A powerful predator that hunts in the wash zone along rocky shores. Found in the transitional waters between warm and cold currents.
Galjoen: South Africa's national fish. Rocky reef specialist. Catch-and-release only. Cannot be bought or sold. Found in the turbulent wash zone along rocky coastlines.
Steenbras: Multiple species (white, black, red) found across different coasts and habitats. Trophy surf fish targeted from the rocks.
Spotted grunter: Estuary flats specialist, prized fly fishing target. Notoriously difficult and rewarding on shallow sand flats.
Marlin and sailfish: November through May off Sodwana Bay and Richards Bay on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. Blue, black, and striped marlin plus sailfish in the warm Agulhas Current water.
Rock and Shore Fishing
South Africa has one of the world's premier land-based big game fisheries. The Wild Coast (Transkei) is the epicenter. Remote rocky points like Mbolompo, Mpame, Labanzi, and Great Kei produce kob, garrick, steenbras, and shad from the rocks year-round. Access is often a long walk with heavy gear, but the fishing justifies it. This is a fishing culture built on surf and rock, not boats.
Diving South Africa
The sardine run (May-July): Billions of sardines migrating north create bait balls that attract everything. Dolphins, sharks, whales, and seabirds attack from all sides. Snorkeling and diving into the action is the defining marine wildlife experience of the Southern Hemisphere. The cold-water corridor that drives the migration is trackable on SST satellite imagery.
Aliwal Shoal: A top-10 world dive site off the KwaZulu-Natal south coast. Ragged-tooth (sand tiger) sharks aggregate June through November. Also reef sharks, rays, and turtles.
Protea Banks: Advanced divers only. Hammerheads, tiger sharks, bull sharks, and Zambezi sharks on a deep offshore reef system.
Sodwana Bay: The southernmost coral reefs on Earth, with 1,200 fish species. Warm Agulhas Current water supports tropical diving conditions on the east coast.
Great white shark cage diving: Gansbaai near Cape Town was the global capital, though sightings have declined since 2017 due to orca predation pressure.
Cape Town kelp forests: The Great African Sea Forest. Cold Benguela water (57-68°F) supports towering kelp canopy with unique species. A completely different diving experience from the tropical east coast.
What Chlorophyll Tells You Here
Benguela upwelling plumes are clearly visible on chlorophyll imagery. These plumes show where cold, nutrient-rich water is reaching the surface and driving productivity. The west coast is consistently greener (more productive) than the east coast.
The Agulhas Bank cold ridge shows on both SST and chlorophyll imagery. This feature concentrates fish aggregations and marks the mixing zone between warm and cold water masses.
For the sardine run, chlorophyll helps identify the productive cold-water corridor the sardines follow. Combined with SST, it shows the complete picture of where the migration pathway is forming.
Off Cape Point, temperature breaks with elevated chlorophyll on the cold side indicate where the upwelling food chain is active. That's where tuna and yellowtail concentrate.
